Research and Development (R&D) Activities
In addition to several individual research ventures, the faculty members of BUIE are engaged in some ongoing group research activities in the following focus areas:
- Alternate energy: This area includes Thermal mapping of dead green species around Bankura that involves designing of alternate energy extraction process development employing hybrid Boilers and small off-grid energy distribution system.
- Carbon sequestration: Enhanced coal bed methane extraction from Ranigunj coal field area, focusing on mines that are no more mineable, by CO2 sequestration from nearby energy intensity industries, mainly power stations. Primarily the activities are limited in the theoretical domain.
- Community water filter: The research focuses on developing cheap water filters based on ceramic membranes tailor made as per the requirements of the economically backward villages of Bankura district.
- Tissue culture and pilot farming: This area includes tissue culture of date trees and bamboos, with pilot farming inside the hostel campus of the institute, before transferring the methodology to the local farmers. Technology inputs in the process of juice extraction from the date tree and developing innovative bamboo structures are also being considered.
- Technological inputs to the traditional Dokra casting method: There are ample scope for development of traditional art of Dokra casting method with sustainable technology upgradation, viz. suitable alloy composition identification, alloy development, fuel efficient furnace designing etc. A thorough survey is being carried out.
